Using Google to Search When CIOC is Offline

Because most CIOC databases are well-indexed and cached by Google, it is possible to make use of Google to search within your database during an outage. It is important that you understand that the results you can return from Google may be incomplete or out-of-date, and the CIOC Offline Tools are generally a better back-up plan for outage or emergency. The frequency with which Google updates its copies of your information, and the completeness of that information, is determined by many factors including the quality of the data, the frequency with which you do updates, and how popular your site is. What you will be searching using this technique will be Google's cache of your public records (in other words, a snapshot of your data the last time Google indexed it).

To get the best results from Google, use the following links to advanced search, which will give you some better options, including omitting "other views", the "Search Results", "Browse By Subject" and "Browse By Organization" pages, and give you 50 records per page:

English:

http://www.google.ca/advanced_search?q=+-%22search+-results%22+-%22browse+-by+-organization%22+-%22browse+-by+-category+of+service%22+-%22UseCICVw%22+site:mysite.cioc.ca&num=50&hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all

French:

http://www.google.ca/advanced_search?q=+-%22r%C3%A9sultats+de+la+recherche%22+-%22explorer+par+organisme%22+-%22parcourir+par+cat%C3%A9gorie+de+service%22+-%22UseCICVw%22+site:mysite.cioc.ca&num=50&hl=fr&lr=&as_qdr=all

Substitute your database address in the appropriate spot after the "site:" part of the string above, and then create a bookmark for yourself. You can also substitue "fr" for "en" to search in French.

When you do a search from the above links and a result list is returned, ensure that you don't click on the usual link but rather look for a drop down arrow next to the Page Title. This will pop out a drop-down menu with Cached/Similar.

Click the link "Cached" to bring up Google's last "snapshot" of this record in your database. The date this snapshot was taken should appear on the first line of the record you are viewing like this:

This is G o o g l e's cache of http://yourdatabase.cioc.ca/record/ABC1234.
It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on 12 Mar 2008 22:15:06 GMT.

...and should give you a good indication of how current and accurate this cached record is in relation to the "live" record that you are not able to currently access.

If you insert a Google Map on your page, it's possible that you will get a Google Maps error when viewing the cached copy. This is because Google Maps keys authorize only specific sites to use that key, and the cached URL is not one of the permitted uses.
